Foot Reading explores the personality and character of a person through his or her feet and toes, accessing the spiritual and emotional levels.

This is a fast-growing area for Reflexologists as an adjunct to Foot Reflexology services. Experienced Foot Readers can tell a lot about the owner of a pair of feet, ranging from personality to perceptions of life events.

In a classic Foot Reflexology session the practitioner is observing subtle changes in the tissue and presentations of the reflex areas. For example, a callused reflex area might represent a more chronic complaint related to the mirrored organ while a sensitive reflex can reflect a more acute, or recent, complaint. However, when the feet are ‘read’ the Foot Reader takes a look at the Mind and Spirit aspects of those reflexes.

Foot and Toe Readers

Foot Reading and Toe Reading has an International audience, just like Reflexology. Here are some well-known Foot and Toe Readers from around the globe:

  • Mauricio Moshe Kruchik – Israel, author of Analyzing Personality Patterns Through The Feet [Kruchik 2004], a helpful guide for Reflexologists on Foot Reading.
  • Jane Sheehan – United Kingdom, author of Let’s Read Our Feet! [Sheehan 2005, ISBN 0955059305], The Foot Reading Coach [Sheehan 2008, ISBN 0955059313], and owner of Find a Foot Reader website.
  • Imre Somogyi – France, author of Reading Toes [Random House UK 2004, ISBN 0852073100].
  • Chris Stormer – South Africa, author Language of the Feet [Hodder & Stoughton 1995, ISBN 0340643455], and considered the “mother” of Foot Reading.

Reading the Feet and Toes

Kahlil Gibran said “All things from the lowest to the loftiest, from the smallest to the greatest, exist within you as equal things. In one atom are found all the elements of the earth. One drop of water contains all the secrets of the oceans. In one motion of the mind are found all the motions of all the laws of existence.” [Spiritual Sayings of Kahlil Gibran, Citadel Press 1962].

A Foot Reader observes patterns in the feet – such as the overall shape of the foot or the lengths of the toes. Spiritual Reflexology observes the essence of a reflex point related to the mind and spirit. Certain organs are perceived as holding forms of anger or fear and can manifest into physical symptoms. For example, a Reflexologist might feel “congestion” in the spleen reflex, in Spiritual Reflexology this could represent a level of fear, or a struggle with new ideas or concepts since the spleen is the “idea” center of Eastern medicine’s digestive system.

Examples of foot reading patterns:

  • Especially long toes may represent a very artistic or talented individual but can also reflect a “head in the clouds” personality, a daydreamer.
  • Very short toes with little toe necks may belong to a very practical owner who may also take life a little too seriously.
  • Deep lines on the plantar portion or sole of the foot can reflect deeply-rooted patterns, perhaps strong ties to families or long-lasting habits and beliefs.
  • Calluses may be a symbol of needing extra protection for a reflex area.
  • Bunions can be read a number of ways, such as representing a broken heart (since this is the area of the heart reflex in Reflexology) or a generous giver.
  • Toenails represent thoughts – nail fungus can be a sign that the owner is uncomfortable with his thoughts or may be sabotaging him or herself.

Finding a Foot Reader

There is no regulation of this field so a foot reader may have extensive training, no training, or somewhere in between. Jane Sheehan's website above gives the reader a few options around the globe but it is not an exhaustive list. Local Reflexology Associations may be able to offer a referral, or the foot reader fan may have to travel to find this type of professional.
